Monuments worth visiting are the roman-gothic church of S.
Francesco with its attached cloister where in 1264 died Pope
Urbano IV. It faces Piazza dei Consoli and is decorated in
XIV and XV century with frescoes of umbro-tuscany style among
which: the “Martyrdom of S. Caterina of Alexandria” (1339),
patron of ceramists of Deruta, ” Madonna, Child and Saints” by
Dornenico Alfani, frescoes by G.B.Caporali and Fiorenzo Di
Lorenzo.
To be visited also the church of Abbè S.Antonio to admire
G.Bartolomeo Caporali's fresco "Merciful Madonna and Saints
Francesco and Remardino" .
Palazzo Comunale (town hall) with its fourteenth century
tower adorned with roman bifore (two lights windows ), contains
in the Council Rooms the art gallery, with works of Niccolò
Alunno (XVI, XVII and XVIII century) and Deruta's ceramics (XVI
century) a "Madonna with Child and Saints" by Pietro Vannucci
called Perugino, paints by Amorosi, Reni, Gaulli called Baciccio,
Graziani called Ciccio Napoletano, a fourteenth century miniated
missal, XVI century table linen.
Strongly recommended a visit to Museum of Ceramic, located
inside the past cloister of San Francesco, where a beautiful
collection of over 600 local antique and modern majolica wares
can be admired. The library counts over 1300 specialized volumes.
Today the tradional ceramic making continues as well into
factories as small workshops, where are jealously guarded and
preserved the original characteristics of local production marked
by utilization of bright white, orange blue and yellow glazes.
